Girls Circle

GIRLS CIRCLE 

          Girls Circle (GC) is the first gender-responsive program in the country to demonstrate effectiveness in reducing delinquency for girls 12-19 years of age, now listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs. The goal of the program is to enhance girl’s abilities so they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, career pursuits and potential for healthy relationships.
 

          Topics covered by Girls Circle programs range from mother-daughter circles to relationships with peers to the development of identity. Activities include role-playing, journaling, cooperative games, creating meaningful art etc. Girls are encouraged to share so that they can learn from one another’s experiences as well as feel heard by a safe and caring group. The program has revealed statistically significant improvements for girls in the following areas:

 

  • Reducing delinquency

 

  • An increase in self-efficacy

 

  • A decrease in self-harming behavior

 

  • A decrease in rates of alcohol use

 

  • An increase in attachment to school

 

  • Increases in positive body image

     

            PBWHA partners with schools and community based programs to conduct workshops at host sites.  The complete curriculum consists of 12 different Activity Guides that provide skill-building themes and activities ranging from 8 to 12 weeks of instruction.  The Guide is used is determined by the hosting organization based on their assessment of the needs of their group:

 

  • Friendship-8 weeks

 

  • Being a Girl - 8 weeks

 

  • Body Image- 8 weeks

 

  • Honoring Diversity - 12 weeks

 

  • Mind, Body, Spirit-12 weeks

 

  • Expressing My Individuality-8 weeks

 

  • Relationships with Peers - 10 weeks

 

  • Who I Am - 8 weeks

 

  • Paths to the Future - 12 weeks

 

  • Wise & Well- 8 weeks

 

  • My Family, My Self - 8 weeks

 

  • Mother-Daughter Circle - 8 weeks.
